GENERAL FAQ

Q: Is ‘Just for Kicks’ a competitive soccer league?
A: No. We are as named - Just for Kicks! We exist for homeschooled kids to have an outlet to play soccer and learn basic skills, while simultaneously giving parents an opportunity to connect with other homeschooling families. We have kids with different abilities and different skill levels that play, and we strive to meet the needs of each family that participates!

Q: Does ‘Just for Kicks’ have the same schedule every year?
A: Yes! We always play on Thursday’s between 12-3 PM. The only thing that changes is the exact start dates of each 8-week season, but you can always count on us starting the third week of September for the fall season and third week of January for the winter season.

Q: Do I, as the parent, need to stay in the building while my kids play?
A: Yes! For more on this, see the “Parent Expectations” section.

Q: Is there seating for viewers?
A: Yes! There are bleachers with views of both fields, as well as tables. These are the only two spaces you should be watching the games from!

Q: Can I bring food in?
A: Yes, BUT...Food and drinks are NOT allowed on the bleachers or in any other area apart from the tables provided. Drinks should also be in sealed or closable bottles to mitigate spills. You are also responsible for cleaning up after yourself and your family!

Q: What about snow days?
A: We follow Jenison Public Schools for snow days, so if they have a snow day, then we have a snow day! You are responsible to both check your email the morning of and to check school closings if you think the weather might be bad enough to permit this. If this ever happens, we will make up the week at the end of the original 8 weeks.

Q: Who are the coaches?
A: Our coaches are volunteer parents and grandparents! They are not soccer superstars, but we believe that everyone has the ability to teach and encourage these kids. Coaching is such a joy and we are always looking for more help, so if you are interested at all, please connect with the program coordinators.

Q: Are there any perks for being a volunteer coach?
A: HUGE yes! Each of our coaches gets 2 kids free for the entire 16 weeks of play.

Q: Are there any opportunities for teenagers to volunteer?
A: Yes! We have recently started assigning willing teens to younger groups to be assistant coaches - we believe this is a great way for them to learn responsibility and grow in character, plus it is a huge help to our coaches to have that extra help! If your teenager is interested in this, please see the program coordinator!

Q: Who is the program coordinator?
A: So glad you asked! Our current coordinators are Kim Bohlman and Danae Thomas - 2 Moms who love soccer and the opportunity to help kids build character and gain skills all while having fun!

PLAYER POLICY

In order to best protect our players as they participate in our soccer program, we have created a policy that must be adhered to. By registering your child(ren), you & your child(ren) are hereby agreeing to the following list of rules:

All players MUST wear shin guards.

All players must wear sneakers or turf shoes. No Crocs, flip flops, sandals, or bare feet. No cleats allowed. (What’s the difference? A cleat has long, sometimes metal or hard plastic, studs to really dig into the surface in order to provide grip & traction. A turf shoe, on the other hand, has a rubber sole with smaller studs or nubs that provide a specific amount of traction optimized for artificial grounds such as turf.)

Players are not allowed to wear hoodies, jewelry, hats, watches, AirPods, etc. while playing. This and any items that may become a projectile can cause injury.

Players are encouraged to bring a water bottle for breaks, which they can leave on the side of their field. It’s important to stay hydrated! They MUST get a drink at drink breaks.

NO spitting on the field or mistreating the turf. (This includes playing with the rubber turf beads on the fields, wearing cleats, pulling on the foam on the half walls, jumping over the half walls, or purposely doing anything to damage the field.)

All players must maintain a sportsman-like conduct.

This program does not tolerate any violence whatsoever. When challenging another player for the ball, if a player commits any of the following actions, he/she will be given a verbal warning and the opposing team will receive possession of the ball. If the player, after receiving the first warning, continues to behave poorly and commits any of these actions again, they will be asked to sit out for the remainder of the game.

These acts include, but are not limited to:
- head butting
- elbows to the face or head
- stomping or kicking a player
- Shoving
- hair pulling

If a player commits any of these actions outside of a challenge for the ball, and shows unwarranted, excessive violent behavior, he/she will receive a two-game suspension. This policy will be implemented at the discretion of the coaches and with the approval of the program coordinators.

PARENT EXPECTATIONS

Parents are Responsible for:
Reading over the player policy with their child(ren) & making sure they adhere to it.

Teaching & encouraging their child(ren) to be respectful of all players, coaches, spectators, & Let’s Play Soccer staff.

Closely supervising their child(ren) during their time at Let’s Play Soccer (which includes: sitting with or at least near them, whether you are watching your child(ren) play or chatting with a friend or fellow soccer mom; cleaning up any messes made; not letting them run, kick soccer balls around, etc.; and, if they play on the right-side field, picking them up at the appropriate time.)

Remaining in the Let’s Play Soccer building the entire time their child(ren) is playing. Your child should not be left unattended in the Let’s Play Soccer building, even if they have an older sibling there. We are a completely volunteer run organization – our volunteers are coaches, not babysitters. Your child(ren) are required to have an 18+ family member present in the Let’s Play Soccer building at all times. Special exceptions can be made, but must be cleared by the Just For Kicks coordinators. For more information, please contact the Just For Kicks coordinators.
